Approximately 6 million people in Canada suffer from some form of sleep disorder and, consequently, are sleep deprived. Yet our understanding of sleep, and sleep disorders is still very limited.
Dr. Douglas Bradley, Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, is at the forefront of research on sleep disorders and their treatment, including the most common called sleep apnea, a breathing disorder that occurs during sleep and affects approximately 2 million Canadians. Focusing on sleep apnea, Dr. Bradley will explain what sleep is and why sleep disorders should be high on business’s priority list, especially transportation and insurance companies, and industries with shift workers. Awareness that sleep apnea and sleep deprivation increase the risk of work-related accidents and cardiovascular diseases is growing. Dr. Bradley will discuss positive methods of treating sleep apnea, improving its symptoms and reducing cardiovascular risk.
Internationally renowned for his groundbreaking clinical and research work in establishing the relationship between sleep apnea and cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Bradley is Director of the Centre for Sleep Medicine at the University of Toronto, the Cardiopulmonary Sleep Disorders and Research Centre at the Toronto General Hospital/University Health Network, and the Sleep Research Laboratory at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Bradley completed his MD degree at the University of Alberta, followed by specialty training in Internal Medicine and Respirology at the University of Toronto. He has published over 130 papers on sleep apnea and related topics, is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and is Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
