In his address Dr. Dana Hanson, President of the Canadian Medical Association, will argue that in today’s climate of health hysteria, fanned by the resurgence of SARS, it has become apparent that Canada’s present public health system is not able to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases without becoming overwhelmed. The fear of other possible infectious disease outbreaks in the future, such as the West Nile Virus, has put in grave doubt the ability of our public health system to cope. Dr. Hanson will issue a wake-up call to governments and the public health community. He will unveil a critical roadmap for an effective long-term pan-Canadian public health strategy that all Canadians will be able to trust.
Dr. Hanson has been an active member of the medical community both at the provincial and national level for many years. He has served as Chair and President of the New Brunswick Medical Society, Deputy Speaker of the CMA’s General Council, and as Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Dermatology Association. A native of Saint John, New Brunswick, Dr. Hanson resides in Fredericton where he has a dermatology practice.
