As consumer prices skyrocket across the country, cellphone bills are the surprising exception. Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index shows that wireless costs have actually fallen more in the last two quarters than they did in the last two years. This exception to the inflationary trend is being attributed to increasing competition in Canada’s telecommunications industry, driven in large part by Quebecor’s acquisition of Freedom Mobile earlier this year.
On November 14, Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, will address the Canadian Club Toronto on the state of competition in the sector and the benefits of an increasingly aggressive market, fueled by the emergence of Quebecor as a major national contender.

Pierre Karl Péladeau
President and CEO, Quebecor
Propelled by Pierre Karl Péladeau’s vision, Quebecor has become a Canadian leader in telecommunications, news media, entertainment and culture. In 1999, Pierre Karl Péladeau took up the reins of the company founded by his father and subsequently steered Quebecor in a new direction with the acquisition of Videotron and TVA.
Quebecor spearheaded the development of competition in mobile telephone service in Québec. Videotron launched its wireless telephony service in 2006 and then its own network in 2010, becoming the first new-generation carrier in Québec and taking on the Big Three incumbents. In April 2023, Videotron acquired Freedom Mobile and became the fourth major national wireless carrier in Canada. Videotron remains the cornerstone of Quebecor’s business model, based on convergence of content and distribution channels.
In 2014, Mr. Péladeau left the corporate world and became Leader of the Official Opposition in Québec’s National Assembly the following year.
He has been back at the helm of Quebecor since February 2017 and has also been President of Videotron since June 2021.
As a businessman who is actively engaged in the community, Pierre Karl Péladeau supports many organizations in the vital fields of culture, health, the environment, and entrepreneurship. He also serves as President of the Fondation Chopin-Péladeau, a private family foundation named after his parents, Raymonde Chopin and Pierre Péladeau. A firm believer in the critical importance of accelerating the Montréal taxi industry’s green shift to electric, he acquired Taxelco in 2019. As a proud Montrealer and sports fan, he purchased the Montreal Alouettes in March 2023.
He also received the Québec National Assembly’s Medal of Honour in 2005, was named a Chevalier of the Ordre de la Pléiade in 2013 and was appointed as an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec in 2022.
