As the number one supplier of energy to the United States, Canada plays a critical role in ensuring the energy security and stability of our continent. Canada’s energy industry is increasing production and developing innovative technologies to help meet steadily increasing demand, but to ensure that we have the energy to continue to fuel a growing economy we must chart a new political and economic course. In this speech to the Canadian Club, Rick George, Suncor Energy CEO and Chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives will talk about how Canada can play a leading role in a strong, sustainable continental energy market.
Rick George was appointed president and chief executive officer of Suncor Energy in 1991. He was named Canada’s “Outstanding CEO of the Year” in 1999 after leading a remarkable business turnaround at Suncor, and received the Canadian Business Leader Award in 2000. Rick was named the Alberta Business Person of the Year for 2001 by Alberta Venture magazine.
Originally from Brush, Colorado, Rick spent 10 years with Sun Company both in the U.S. and the U.K. He moved from London, England, to his current position in 1991.
Rick was named chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives in January 2003. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Enbridge Inc., and the U.S. offshore and onshore drilling company, GlobalSantaFe Corporation.
Rick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Colorado State University and a law degree from the University of Houston Law School, and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development.
