The Need for a North American Energy Policy

Some would argue that North America has been living in an energy crisis for more than 30 years. This crisis has a way of erupting again and again. Since the first oil embargo in 1973, there have been times when energy has been plentiful and affordable, but then there have also been times when prices and supply have gone haywire. Tight supplies and high prices for energy in North America cost consumers and businesses in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Political leaders in this region know that North America needs energy, but even more they now recognize the need for a balanced, innovative energy policy that encompasses at least Canada, the US and Mexico.

Ralph Klein was sworn in as Alberta’s 12th Premier on December 14, 1992 and retired as Premier exactly 14 years later. During his term in office, oil and gas played a key role in Alberta’s rising fortunes and Mr. Klein was known for being outspoken on energy issues. In 2003 for example, he vehemently argued that the proposed route of an Alaskan oil pipeline needed to be integrated with the already extensive Alberta pipeline system.

Mr. Klein joins us on June 11th, to tackle the challenging issue of the need for a North American energy policy.
