Corporate Governance in Turmoil

In his address to the Canadian Club Purdy Crawford will discuss the state of corporate governance in Canada including the relevance of recent developments in the U.S. and Canada. He will also address some key questions: What is good corporate governance? Can ethics be taught? Is the purpose of the public corporation only to enhance shareholder value? What do we need to do in Canada?

In addition to serving on the boards of several large public companies, including AT&T Canada, Canadian National, Maple Leaf Foods and Petro Canada, Mr. Crawford is currently Chairman of the Five Year Review Advisory Committee under The Securities Act of Ontario. The recently released draft report of the Committee made wide-ranging recommendations for Ontario’s securities regulatory framework, including improvements to financial reporting and disclosure by public companies. A respected lawyer and business person, Purdy Crawford has practised law primarily in the corporate/commercial area. In 2000 Mr. Crawford was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and received the Ivey Business Leader of the Year Award.
