McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Underworld

When you think of organized crime you often think of drugs; and when you think of drugs you think of Columbia, Thailand or Afghanistan. But what about Canada? Believe it or not marijuana has provided more jobs in parts of Canada than in the industries of oil, logging and gas combined.

So why the focus on drugs in Canada? On May 1, The Canadian Club of Toronto hosts Misha Glenny, former BBC World correspondent, who joins us to talk about his new book McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Underworld. From the sex trade in Bulgaria to the marijuana industry in British Columbia, he will outline the growing global movement of people and money and how it affects the development of crime across the world.

This highly engaging event will focus on both the micro and macro issues related to organized crime, including how the globalization of crime is impacting the security of Canada and Canadian businesses. What are the implications for our legal system and how do we protect ourselves? Misha will reflect on the future of organized crime (you might be shocked at what his research suggests) and he’ll take your questions. So, don’t miss out on what’s sure to be one of the most interesting events of our spring season.

Plus pre-order a copy of Misha’s book that has been reviewed in the New York Times, Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, and receive a special Canadian Club discount. Of course it will be autographed, so it makes a great gift.
