Mario Dumont was first elected to the Québec National Assembly in 1994 and until recently was the Action Démocratique du Québec’s (ADQ) only elected member. In May 2002 the ADQ, which advocates a new relationship with the rest of Canada, elected four new members and could, according to recent polls, form a majority government if an election were held now.
Mario Dumont, a native of Cacouna near Rivière-du-Loup, first became involved in politics in 1988 at the age of sixteen when he became a member of the youth commission of the Québec Liberal party. Mr. Dumont helped to found the ADQ in 1994, was elected its first president, and subsequently became leader. In his address to the Canadian Club Mr. Dumont will discuss his personal values and his party’s ideas for an emerging Québec.
