JOINTLY WITH THE EMPIRE CLUB OF CANADA.
This year both the Canadian and Empire Clubs committed to inviting the four federal party leaders to address our combined audiences before a federal election is called, giving each leader the opportunity to deliver a less scripted speech and also to take questions from the audience. Jack Layton, the leader of the NDP Party of Canada, is the first of the four leaders to accept our offer.
Mr. Layton, who along with his 18 NDP colleagues in parliament holds the balance of power in the country, joins us on Monday, November 7. He will talk about the current federal situation and how he and his NDP colleagues have used the minority parliament to get more done for the people of Canada and the environment.
Jack Layton was elected leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada in January 2003. Prior to taking on this role, Mr. Layton served on Toronto City Council for more than 20 years and previously served on the faculty of Ryerson University. Over the course of his career, Mr. Layton has been an impassioned social and environmental advocate, and a national voice for municipalities, most recently serving as President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Mr. Layton’s achievements include – founding the White Ribbon Campaign, which now provides a voice for men against violence against women in more than 30 countries and establishing the first Health City program, now in use around the world.
