Please join us on October 12th as Veteran Broadcast Journalist Don Newman, moderates a panel discussion on “The Challenges and Opportunities of Innovation” with three leading Canadian innovative thinkers – Roger Martin (Dean of the Rotman School of Management at University of Toronto), Doug Muzyka (DuPont), and Ilse Treurnicht (MaRS Discovery District).

Meet Our Panelists:

Roger Martin has served as dean of the Rotman School of Management since September 1, 1998 and has accepted a third-term which will finish June 30, 2014.  Previously, he spent 13 years as a Director of Monitor Company, a global strategy consulting firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he served as co-head of the firm for two years.In 2010, he was named by BusinessWeek as one of the 27 most influential designers in the world.  In 2009, he was named by The Times and Forbes.com one of the 50 top management thinkers in the world (#32).  In 2007 he was named a BusinessWeek ‘B-School All-Star’ for being one of the 10 most influential business professors in the world. BusinessWeek also named him one of seven ‘Innovation Gurus’ in 2005. He writes extensively for newspapers and magazines including Financial Times, BusinessWeek, Washington Post, Fast Company and The Globe & Mail. For Harvard Business Review, he has written twelve articles and authors a regular blog.  His books include The Responsibility Virus (2002), The Opposable Mind (2007), The Design of Business (2009), and Fixing the Game (May 2011).

Doug Muzyka is senior vice president and chief science and technology officer for DuPont. He joined the company in 1985 as a research scientist and held a variety of research and research management roles in North America through 1994. Dr. Muzyka has been in a number of senior leadership roles in the United States, Mexico and China.  He was president and CEO of DuPont Canada from 2003 to 2006.  He has served on advisory boards for universities, as well as on boards of Chambers of Commerce, industry associations and business councils on sustainable development.  Dr. Muzyka was born in Canada and graduated as class valedictorian from the University of Western Ontario with bachelor, master and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering. He completed additional research for his doctorate at the Université de Téchnologie de Compiègne in France.

Ilse Treurnicht is the CEO of MaRS Discovery District, a leading innovation centre located in Toronto. She oversees both the development and operations of the MaRS Centre and its broad suite of entrepreneurship and innovation programs. Ilse has worked closely with the leadership of Toronto’s academic institutions and teaching hospitals to create MaRS Innovation, an integrated commercialization platform for 14 Toronto Institutions and served as the interim Managing Director for a year following its formal launch in early 2008. Ilse joined MaRS in early 2005 from her role as President & CEO of Primaxis Technology Ventures, a start-up stage venture capital fund focused on the advanced technologies sector. She is an active member of Canada’s innovation community and has served on the boards of private companies, industry associations and research organizations. She has also been a member of several government advisory panels. In 2009, Dr. Treurnicht was inducted into Women’s Executive Network’s Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Hall of Fame.
