Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara will discuss the 2004 Ontario budget, which he will present in the Legislature on May 18th. In this budget, Minister Sorbara promises to set out a plan that inspires a new generation of economic growth in the province; taking a responsible, balanced approach to deal with Ontario’s serious fiscal challenges and laying a foundation for the changes required to fix, and then improve, Ontario’s vital public services.
Greg Sorbara was appointed to the McGuinty Cabinet as Minister of Finance on October 23, 2003. He has a long and distinguished history of public service and private sector achievement. First elected in 1985 in the riding of York North, a riding that had not elected a Liberal in 42 years, Greg held a series of senior cabinet portfolios in David Peterson’s Liberal government, including the double portfolios of Minister of Colleges & Universities/Minister of Skills Development, and Minister of Labour/Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues.
Greg returned to the private sector in 1995 and remained active in his community and in business. He served as a director of the United Way of York Region from 1998-2001 and was a member of the board of the York University Alumni Association from 1997-2001.
Returning to the public arena in 1999, Greg was elected President of the Ontario Liberal Party and held that position until February 2004. In June 2001, he was elected to the riding of Vaughan-King-Aurora, receiving over 60 percent of the vote. Greg also served as the Ontario Liberal Party’s 2004 Campaign Chair.
Greg holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University’s Glendon College and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. He and his wife Katie have six children and six grandchildren.
