On April 25th, The Canadian Club of Toronto and Equal Voice will, once again, join forces to spotlight women in politics at the Seventh Annual Women in Public Life Luncheon. For more than ten years Equal Voice has been promoting the election of more women in all levels of government. This year we are pleased to announce Andrea Horwath, Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats, as our keynote speaker and Equal Voice’s EVE award recipient.
Andrea Horwath is the Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats. Elected Leader in 2009, Andrea brings energy, honesty and compassion to a party that offers sensible solutions to the challenges facing people in Ontario.
Born in Stoney Creek to an autoworker’s family, Andrea earned her degree in Labour Studies from McMaster University paying her way with low-wage jobs. After university, Andrea took jobs organizing in her community – teaching and training workers in Hamilton, developing co-op housing in Welland and working as a community organizer for a local legal clinic. Her own life experience and those of the people she worked with led her to politics and Hamilton City Hall.
After serving seven years as a Councillor in Hamilton municipal politics, Andrea handily won election as the MPP for Hamilton East. As MPP, and today as Leader, Andrea is focused on making life more affordable, protecting jobs, improving health and education and building a better future for all Ontarians.
