In her address to The Canadian Club of Toronto and The Empire Club of Canada, Dr. Chan will discuss Global Health Security, including the root causes of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, their potential implications in a world where businesses and financial markets are closely interdependent, and the recently developed mechanisms and instruments that provide global defence against the infectious disease threat. As more global health threats continue to emerge, Dr. Chan will also discuss preparedness measures that can be taken by countries and by the corporate sector. The example of pandemic influenza will be used to illustrate the dilemma of preparing for an unpredictable yet potentially catastrophic event.
