Investment in university research has proven economic impact and will be a driving force for Canada’s prosperity. As we build on this country’s own research enterprise, what lessons can we learn from the United States where research funding is now surpassing the $35 billion (US) mark? Through case studies, University of Toronto President Robert Birgeneau will show how sustained investment in basic research at U.S. universities has helped create the new economies that are the foundation of American prosperity.
Robert Birgeneau became the University of Toronto’s 14th president in July 2000. A graduate of U of T and Yale University, he is the former dean of science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The author of more than 350 journal articles, he is internationally acclaimed for his research in solid-state physics. His many honours include the Oliver E. Buckley Prize for Condensed Matter Physics and the J.E. Lilienfeld Prize.
