SOLD OUT One Country, Two Systems: Political Implications & Economic Opportunities for Hong Kong

A Joint meeting with the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, with the support of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

On 1 July 1997 the People’s Republic of China (PRC) resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, which became a Special Administrative Region of the PRC. Under the principle of “one country, two systems”, enshrined in the Basic Law, Hong Kong exercises a high degree of autonomy and enjoys executive, legislative and independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication. Hong Kong’s previous legal system has continued in place as the foundation of the rule of law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (the HKSAR).

At this 6th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China, Elsie Leung, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR government, will speak about how the rule of law is being maintained under the principle of “one country, two systems”. Secretary Leung will also explain how Hong Kong, with its unique position and legal system in China, can assist overseas companies and investors in resolving business disputes and sorting out legal complications in Mainland China. She will also discuss the benefits that the legal services sector can enjoy under the recently signed free trade agreement, entitled “Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement”, with China.
