On December 13th Minister Gerry Phillips joins us to talk about legislative changes to improve the competitiveness of businesses in Ontario.
Gerry Phillips was appointed Minister of Government Services by Premier Dalton McGuinty in June 2005. He first entered provincial politics in 1987 when he was elected to represent Scarborough-Agincourt in the Ontario legislature. In the Peterson government, Mr. Phillips served as Minister of Citizenship and later as Minister of Labour. In opposition, he served as finance and native affairs critic, and as chair of the economic policy committee for the official opposition. Mr. Phillips was re-elected in 2003, and was appointed by Premier McGuinty to serve as the Chair of Management Board Committee of Cabinet.
Mr. Phillips holds an honours bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Western Ontario’s School of Business. Over his career Mr. Phillips has worked for Procter & Gamble and Canadian Marketing Associates, where he became president in 1977. In 1979, he launched his own firm, the Sales Development Group, which became Canada’s largest management consulting firm specializing in sales force consulting and in 1982 he founded the Retail Resource Group, which became one of the largest retail service groups in the country.
Prior to going into provincial politics, Mr. Phillips served as a school trustee for 11 years and during this period was chair of the Metropolitan Toronto School Board and the Scarborough Board of Education.
