JOINT EVENT WITH THE EMPIRE CLUB OF CANADA
Canada has one of the most concentrated banking systems of any country in the G-7. Yet, after two failed attempts at bank mergers in the past six years, there remains speculation that the issue will once again come to the fore in the near future. The government of Canada encourages our banks to become international players. However there are still elements of the Canadian banking system who want to see mergers as a means to decrease domestic bank competition.
The Honourable Henry N. R. Jackman will discuss why he believes that Canadian bank mergers are neither good for Canada nor good for the Canadian banks themselves.
A distinguished businessman, Mr. Jackman is Honourary Chairman of both the Empire Life Insurance Company and the Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company. He is a former Chairman of National Trust Company, a former Director of the Bank of Nova Scotia and has served on the Board of several other major Canadian corporations. In addition, Mr. Jackman is a former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the former Chancellor of the University of Toronto.
Mr. Jackman is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of Ontario and holds honorary degrees from nine Canadian universities. He is a member of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and a recipient of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Management Distinguished Graduate Award.
