Canada's Financial Markets: Efficiency, Innovation and Leadership

The Canadian economy has outperformed the G7 group of countries for the past two years, due in part to a recovering US economy as well as domestic investment and growth in mining, forestry and oil and gas. Corporate taxes have notched down; inflation is in check and government finances are better managed. The higher Canadian dollar is a reality which Canadian businesses are adjusting to. The strength and resilience of our financial markets has also been a key factor in Canada’s economic performance. As a case in point: one-half of the global mining financings last year were arranged in Canadian markets.

As Chair of the Investment Dealers’ Association, Kym Anthony will focus his speech on three topics, the structural efficiencies in trading and in clearing and settlement, the innovations in corporate finance and investment products and the expertise and infrastructure in the Canadian marketplace, all of which have contributed to record financing activity, unprecedented financing and unparalleled investor participation in Canadian financial markets.

Kym Anthony is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank Financial where he coordinated the merger of First Marathon and Levesque Beaubien and the recent acquisition of Putnam Lovell Securities. Mr. Anthony began his career with CIBC Wood Gundy as an investment banker in 1980. He developed Wood Gundy’s Asian operations, leading the Tokyo office during the mid 1980’s and he also ran CIBC World Markets Fixed Income and Derivatives Operations as well as the Treasury and Risk Management. From 1993 to 1998, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TD Securities and Vice Chair of TD Bank. Mr. Anthony is currently on the board of ComDev International and the Canadian Opera Company.

He received his BA from Simon Fraser University and his MBA from the University of Western Ontario.
