China's Transition: Opportunity or Threat.

The opening up of China has been described as an event of historical significance on par with the rise of America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We are witnessing the re-emergence of one of the world’s oldest and greatest civilizations. And that re-emergence as a global economic superpower is being accompanied by great changes to the economy and particularly to financial services. China’s challenge now is to manage the transition of its financial system from a supply or State-driven system to a demand-driven system.

HSBC has its roots in Hong Kong and Shanghai and has had a continuous presence in China since 1865 where today it is China’s largest foreign bank. Lindsay Gordon, President and CEO, HSBC Bank Canada will speak about the challenges of China’s re-emergence as an economic force on the world stage and the very difficult task of moving the interconnected system of financial services as a whole towards a demand-driven system.

Mr. Gordon joined HSBC Bank Canada in 1987 in Toronto. He was appointed Chief Operating Officer in December 1999 and President & CEO in October 2003. He holds a BA (1973) and MBA (1976) from the University of British Columbia.

Mr. Gordon is President of the CH.I.L.D. Foundation and a board member of the Business Council of B.C., Governor of Junior Achievement of Canada and a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children.
