Canada - U.S. Relations: The View From Washington

Relations with the United States are a complex and omnipresent component of life in Canada. It is an international partnership in which so many of the issues are driven by local or domestic pressures. Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael F. Kergin, will discuss current events in Washington from a Canadian perspective, including a number of the bilateral themes that have arisen in the early days of the Bush Administration and the 107th Congress.

A graduate of the University of Toronto and Oxford University, Michael Kergin joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1967. His postings, in Ottawa and abroad, have included: the Canadian Mission to the United Nations; Canadian Embassy to Chile; Canadian Embassy to Cuba; Assistant Deputy Minister; Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister and Assistant Secretary to Cabinet. He was appointed Ambassador to the United States in 2000.
