Civil Liberties Under Fire

Described by The New York Times as, “a bounty hunter in search of human justice”, Reed Brody, Special Counsel of Human Rights Watch, will address how the very real threat of globalized terror has been met with a globalized pattern of human rights abuse.

The case of Canadian Maher Arar, who was sent by the United States to Syria, hits close to home, but it is not unique. From Guantanamo to Malawi, from Iraq to Malaysia, people are being detained and deported to countries that practice torture. Brody will make the point that a willingness to trample on basic rights in the name of fighting terrorism puts us all at risk.

Human Rights Watch is one of the world’s leading human rights organizations. As Special Counsel, Reed Brody has conducted human rights investigations around the world. He directed Human Rights Watch’s intervention in the case of Augusto Pinochet in Britain’s House of Lords and coordinates the prosecution of the former Chadian dictator, Hissene Habre. Brody has led United Nation Teams investigating massacres in the Democratic Republic of Congo and he has been a voice for human rights in El Salvador and Haiti.
