One year after the launch of The Next 36 – Canada’s entrepreneurial leadership initiative aimed at transforming this country’s most promising students into high impact leaders – come join Amanda Lang and the program’s Founding Chairman, Reza Satchu, as they delve into the evolution of this initiative, the people behind it, what they have achieved and how they plan on changing Canada’s entrepreneurial landscape.
The Next 36 is a national entrepreneurship program for Canada’s most promising undergraduate students. Key resources are provided to extraordinarily talented young Canadians with the potential to build and lead great organizations. Promising undergraduates are selected from a variety of academic disciplines, and from across Canada, through a rigorous national selection process. The young entrepreneurs selected are placed in teams of four and tasked with building a business. They are provided mentorship from some of Canada’s top business leaders, $50,000 cash and academic instruction from some of the world’s top faculty. Reza Satchu is Managing Partner of Alignvest Capital Management, a private investment company based in Toronto and New York. He has co-founded, built and managed several successful operating businesses from inception, including SupplierMarket, a 225 person supply chain software company (investors included KKR, Sequoia and Onex) that was sold to Ariba in 2000; StorageNow Holdings which grew to be Canada’s second largest self-storage company before being sold to InStorage REIT in 2007; Greyson Asia, a market neutral hedge fund focused on China, Korea and Japan; and, KGS Alpha Capital Markets, a $160 million fixed income broker dealer focused on the US mortgage market. Previously, Mr. Satchu spent 12 years in New York City where he was a General Partner at Fenway Partners, a $1.5 billion private equity firm, and a Financial Analyst at Merrill Lynch.
Mr. Satchu is the Founding Chairman of The Next 36, Vice Chairman of the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation and Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, where he created and taught the top-ranked undergraduate class for 6 years. He is a recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 award (2007) and the McGill University Management Leadership Award (2010). Mr. Satchu has a BA from McGill University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
