As the global economy moves beyond the financial crisis and begins to make the transition from recession to recovery, Rick Waugh will look at the new landscape emerging in the financial services industry. From a Canadian perspective, he will examine steps being taken by the public and private sectors around the world to strengthen the global financial system for the future.
Rick Waugh began his career with Scotiabank in 1970, in branch banking in Manitoba. After relocating to Toronto a few months later, he went on to serve in a number of positions of increasing responsibility in the Bank’s investment, corporate and retail banking areas. In 1985, he moved to New York where, for the next eight years, as the Bank’s most senior officer in the United States, he played a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the Bank’s U.S. activities.
In 1993, Rick returned to Toronto as Senior Executive Vice-President, Corporate Banking. He became Vice-Chairman, Corporate Banking, in June 1995, followed by Vice-Chairman, International Banking & Wealth Management in June 1998. He was appointed Scotiabank’s President and CEO in 2003.
