Judging, Politics, and Why They Must Be Kept Separate

It is easy to get confused about what judges do, not least because judges rarely speak in public settings to explain what their task is, and how they go about performing it.  The Chief Justice will address the confusion between judging and politics, which seems to have taken hold in recent years.  Her message is simple:  judges must not become politicians, because judging is not the same as politics.

On April 17, 1989 Beverley McLachlin was sworn in as the third woman to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. In June, 2000 she became the 17th Chief Justice of Canada and the first woman to hold that position. Chief Justice McLachlin’s legal career has included private practice, teaching law and serving as Chief Justice of British Columbia.
