Asking the Right Questions

Sheila Fraser will discuss how improving the performance of the public sector will go a long way toward restoring confidence in government. She will argue that success means moer than giving taxpayers value for money, and that it is about building stronger public institutions, a better country and a healthier democratic society. The Office of the Auditor General promotes accountable government, an ethical and effective public service, good governance, sustainable development and the protection of Canada’s legacy and heritage.

Since being appointed Auditor General of Canada in May 2001 Sheila Fraser has issued four reports, the most recent being on December 2002. In that report, Ms. Fraser highlighted two issues with significant implications for accountability and the quality of management by the federal government, namely “the government’s failure to provide Parliament with adequate information and its lacklustre progress in achieving key government-wide management reforms”.
