Stephen Harper has been at the forefront of national debate on every major issue since becoming Leader of the Opposition in 2002. He worked as a Progressive Conservative parliamentary assistant in the mid-80s, and then became a founding member of the Reform Party of Canada. Harper was one of the key architects of the Reform Party’s ‘zero in three’ plan to eliminate the federal deficit that was the centrepiece of the party’s 1993 campaign platform. He impressed many as an effective, energetic MP who served Reform as a leading spokesperson for issues related to finance and national unity. After leaving Parliament in 1997, Stephen Harper served as president of the National Citizens Coalition.
Stephen Harper began writing and speaking about the need for conservative unity in 1995, and last fall, spearheaded the effort to unite Canada’s two conservative parties. As a candidate for the leadership of the new Conservative Party of Canada, he sees the coming months as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make conservative values the driving force of Canadian politics.
